In May 2021, 2GO Travel inaugurated the M/V 2GO Maligaya, its largest, fastest, and most technologically-advanced RORO-passenger vessel. Her arrival in the Philippines was heralded with much joy and excitement, because it has been several years since 2GO acquired a new vessel, and more than a decade since the Philippine last saw a liner with such size and prestige. More importantly, it also serves as a beacon of hope not only for 2GO, but for the entire shipping and tourism industry in the Philippines as well, all of which are trying to recover from the effects of the on-going pandemic.

The 2GO Maligaya is the largest locally-owned RORO passenger vessel to ever sail Philippine waters, surpassing the size and tonnage records of the last ship to hold this prestigious title. She has a length of 195 meters, a width of 26 meters and an impressive gross tonnage of 29,046 tons! This means that the 2GO Maligaya has almost two times more cargo space than the next largest ship in 2GO’s fleet.
Two 10,045 kW Wartsila main engines drive two controllable-pitch propellers, making the ship capable of speeds of up to 23.5 knots or around 43.5 kilometers per hour. This makes her the fastest ship 2GO Travel has ever fielded, and one of the fastest liners to ever sail Philippine waters.
On the inside, complementing the 2GO Maligaya’s spectacular technical specifications are its world-class amenities and accommodations. The modern Japanese aesthetics and architecture, combined with 2GO’s own festive theme makes for a interior design never before seen in any Philippine liner. It also boasts 2GO’s newest accommodation types which promises more privacy and security for solo travellers, and those travelling by pair – but for a much affordable price.
On 30 May 2021, 2GO finally got the chance to unveil its newest flagship to the Filipino riding public, and the world as it sent off the M/V 2GO Maligaya on its maiden voyage from Manila to Cagayan de Oro City via Cebu. What’s more, the Philippine Ship Spotters Society (PSSS) was given an exclusive opportunity to experience what the 2GO Maligaya has to offer during this momentous occasion! Let’s have a look!
The experience starts before you even get near the ship. It is recommended that you arrive at the port 4-6 hours before your time of departure, because you will need to undergo several security checks before you can finally check in for your voyage, and there might be a queue or other unforeseen situations.
By the way, 2GO Travel strictly implements government-mandated health and safety protocols, so make sure you wear a face mask and face shield at all times. Most importantly, do not forget to bring the travel documents required by your destination LGU, if applicable! These will be inspected during the check-in process. After checking in, there might be a short wait, but the sight of the 2GO Maligaya’s huge structure from the windows of the terminal’s waiting area is already enough to fuel your anticipation to the maximum. Well, what can we say? It’s a massive ship that’s as tall as a ten-storey building! Eventually, the boarding process will start and you will find yourself walking towards the ship in no time.
As you get closer and closer to the ship docked on its starboard side, you can’t help but feel awestruck by how big it is. The 2GO Maligaya’s colorful new livery also conveys to you a sense of fun and excitement even before you take the first step onboard.
A final security check at the foot of the gangway, then it’s time to finally set foot on the 2GO Maligaya! There’s a bit of a walk up the stairs, so please take care and watch your step! In case you need assistance, the helpful crew will always be nearby, ready to assist you.
Upon reaching the foyer at the very top, you will feel a blast of cold air which is enough to give you a sense of relief. There is a final temperature check and hand sanitation here, which is adjacent to the main entrance of the ship.
Stepping inside the entrance, you will be greeted by another set of helpful crew members who will help you find your way to your accommodations. The next thing you know, you’ll be asking yourself, “Am I really aboard a local ferry?”
As your eyes inevitably soar upward to the high ceiling of the three-storey atrium, you suddenly find yourself in the middle of the 2GO Maligaya’s busy main lobby. This is an amusing, but unsurprising reaction – after all, the upscale hotel-like atmosphere is, for now, unique to this ship.
The ambience is warm and inviting. During the day, natural light seeps down from the skylight dome high above. The glass balustrades of the atrium balcony and the grand staircase balances out the wood accents and earthy colors with a modern feel. Looking towards the fore, or front, section of the lobby, is a single elevator connecting all three floors. Flanking it are four passageways that lead to passenger accommodations.
Guests who are booked in room-type accommodations are invited to proceed to the ship’s front desk office to receive their room keys. An identification card will be deposited in exchange for the keys, so make sure you don’t lose them!
Aside from assisting you with your accommodations, the friendly front desk staff are also there to address any questions or concerns you might have with your onboard experience. One thing that stands out the most is that the crew are professionally-trained, yet warm and friendly! They will never fail to greet you whenever you encounter them, and they will be happy to lend a hand should you need their help.
There is a short wait while the rooms are being prepared, so there’s a bit of time to look around. To the right of the front desk office is the shipboard souvenir shop, 2GO Gear. It offers a variety of 2GO-branded merchandise, such as shirts, slippers, mugs, bags, and more.
At the left , facing towards the aft (or rear) of the ship, are the passageways leading to the tourist class accommodations. Nestled in between them are the charging station and Quikmart convenience store.
On the opposite side of the lobby, beside the entrance are the salon and clinic. There is also a prayer room if you want to spend some time in prayer and quiet reflection.
Once the rooms are ready, the front desk staff will bid you an enjoyable stay, while an attendant shows you to your rooms. The lobby is located on the 5th floor of the ship, along with the Tourist class and Tatami class accommodations. The 6th floor is home to the Business Class rooms and the restaurants, while the 7th floor houses the ship’s four luxurious staterooms, each with its own toilet and bath.

Tatami Class is inspired from the fundamental accommodation type of Japanese ferries, where passengers would lie down on traditional straw mats called tatami. In 2GO Maligaya, this time-tested accommodation is given a boost with a foam mattress and pillow. A single tatami room can accommodate up to 10 passengers at a time.
Tourist Class Premium
Tourist Class is an all-time favorite of Filipino travelers, and usually meant bunks in air conditioned rooms. This one-bed cubicle is perfect for solo travelers for its extra sense of security and privacy.

This is 2GO Maligaya’s quintessential business class room. It’s a spacious Western-style room with two comfortable beds, each with its own overhead light and electrical socket for your charging needs. A nightstand with a built-in alarm clock and light controls is situated in between the beds, and above it is a window with an excellent view of the sea. The room also comes with its own TV unit, sofa, desk, and sink. There are only four staterooms in the ship, each of them boasting two queen-sized beds, a dresser, a receiving area, and its own toilet and bath. Common washroom and shower facilities are located on each floor of the ship, which includes an all-gender restroom. Before moving on to the onboard experience, let’s give you an exclusive look at the parts of the ship that are usually not seen by passengers.
Have you ever wondered how a big and modern ship like the 2GO Maligaya is navigated safely through Philippine waters? All of that happens on the ship’s navigational bridge – where the ship’s deck officers control almost every aspect of the ship’s operation. It is located at the topmost level of the leading edge of the superstructure, and houses the modern, and state-of-the-art navigational equipment that the 2GO Maligaya needs for a safe and comfortable voyage.
On the other hand the ship’s engine room houses the powerful engines that give the 2GO Maligaya its impressive speed and power. There are two main engines which deliver power to the ship’s propellers, while three powerful generators that provide the ship electrical power. It is maintained up to international standards, so the engine room always remains clean and safe to work on. Adjacent to where the engines are actually located is an air conditioned control room where the ship’s engineers can monitor the status of the engines 24/7.
You feel a slight rumble permeate throughout the ship as its two massive main engines come to life. Finally, it’s time to depart and the 2GO Maligaya makes her way out of the port and into the open sea. Whether you are the kind of passenger who wants to observe the ship’s departure at one of the many observation areas of the ship, or the kind who prefers to stay at your accommodation during this whole affair, there is one thing that is certain: the fun is yet to start!
Speaking of fun, one of the things that sea travelers look forward to is the dining experience. The food onboard can either make or break a passenger’s perception of the trip, so good food is very important. Luckily, the 2GO Maligaya has got you covered! Each passenger is entitled to free meals from either of the ship’s two restaurants – Island Fiesta and Horizon Café.
Passengers from the tatami and tourist class accommodations get to enjoy the festive atmosphere of the Island Fiesta cafeteria. It is located on the 6th Floor, near the staircases just beside the row of windows of the ship’s promenade. Near the entrance is a washing area so your hands are squeaky clean before your enjoy your food. Island Fiesta has a variety of food items on display, ranging from main courses, to snack items and dessert. You can choose to enjoy your meal at the adjacent dining area, or even the promenade!

Guests billeted in business class and staterooms, on the other hand, are invited to have a more intimate dining experience at the Horizon Café. Also located at the 6th floor, but in a more secluded area, the atmosphere in the Horizon Café is quieter and more relaxing. Massive windows give the diners a beautiful view of the sea outside.

Despite having different settings, one thing is certain – both of these restaurants serve mouth-watering and delectable meals that will have you asking for seconds. Aside from main courses, short orders are also available from the ship’s restaurants. Pasta, sandwiches, dessert – they’ve got it all, so this is perfect if you’re having some cravings. You can opt for room service too, so you can get hot and fresh meals right at your doorstep!

The fun continues even after the sun goes down! Watch the sunset from the ship’s elegant promenade area with a refreshing drink or two from 2GO’s signature bar, Sea Breeze. Located at the sixth floor of the ship, it gives you magnificent views of the sea for you and your companions to enjoy while cruising onboard.
If you prefer to be outside with only the wide open sky above you, then there is no better place to visit than the ship’s wide sundeck area. Enjoy the calming breeze and the sounds of the sea as you watch the dusk turn into a starry sky.
The activities onboard continue well into the night. Just after dinner, the Island Fiesta restaurant becomes the venue for the 2GO Maligaya’s live band. Unwind as you enjoy being serenaded with your favorite songs. Who knows, you might get a chance to sing on stage and let everyone hear that golden voice!

Not only that, they also have travel essentials such as toiletries, hygiene products, face masks and face shields (a must during this pandemic!) and even medicines! All of these can be had for a reasonable price, so I’m sure you’ll be back for more.
Fast forward to the next morning – after getting a good night’s sleep, a nice warm shower, and a hearty breakfast you realize that you need a bit of pampering before you arrive at your destination. You’re in luck, the onboard Salon will come to your rescue. They offer a variety of services, such as manicure and pedicure, haircuts and hair color, as well as massages! They’ll make sure that you’ll arrive at your destination looking great and feeling great.
With all the fun stuff to do onboard, time passes very quickly and you will soon find yourself at the end of your trip. You can’t help but feel a pang of sadness, because you’ve gotten so used to the onboard experience.
Who wouldn’t be? Personally, I think the M/V 2GO Maligaya is truly a wonderful ship, and the timing of its arrival in Philippine waters couldn’t be better. It gives the everyday Filipino passenger a one of a kind experience, one that is thought to be only available in cruise ships. At the same time, the ship’s hotel-like atmosphere makes it a more familiar environment to those who might be riding a ship for the first time. And both of these are good things, not just for 2GO , but for the entire travel and tourism industry as well – both of which are trying to survive in the midst of this pandemic.
